Choosing an rPET Flake Supplier in Pakistan: 10 Questions Procurement Should Ask

Key takeaways

  • The cheapest flake is rarely the cheapest once you count downtime, defects and rejected batches.
  • Ask for a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) per grade and a Certificate of Analysis (COA) per lot — not a one-time certificate.
  • Consistency batch-to-batch matters more than a single good sample.
  • Confirm supply reliability, logistics and payment terms before you switch a production line.
  • Always run a paid sample on your own line before signing for volume.

For a manufacturer, changing raw-material supplier is never trivial. A flake that looks fine in a bag can still cause fines, colour issues, moisture problems or line stoppages once it hits your extruder or spinning line. The goal of supplier selection is not to find the lowest price per kilo — it is to find the lowest total cost, including quality, consistency and reliability.

Here are the ten questions that separate a dependable rPET supplier from a risky one.

1. Can you show a TDS for the grade and a COA for each lot?

A Technical Data Sheet states the target spec; a Certificate of Analysis reports the actual measured values for the lot you’re buying. Reputable suppliers issue a COA with every shipment. If a supplier can only offer a single, old certificate, that is a red flag. (See our guide on how to read an rPET COA.)

2. What are your typical IV, moisture, PVC and contamination levels?

These four numbers drive processability. Ask for typical ranges and how tightly they are held. Match them to your process rather than assuming "higher is always better".

3. Is the flake hot-washed or cold-washed?

Hot-washed flake is cleaner and higher-grade; cold-washed is cheaper but only removes surface dirt. Make sure the wash type matches your application (hot vs cold wash explained).

4. How consistent is quality batch to batch?

One good sample proves little. Ask how they maintain consistency — sorting discipline, wash-line control, and per-lot testing. Request COAs from several recent lots to see the spread, not just the best day.

5. Can you supply my required volume, reliably?

Confirm monthly capacity and how they handle demand spikes. A supplier who over-promises and under-delivers will stop your line as surely as bad quality will.

6. Do you colour-sort? Clear vs coloured streams?

If appearance matters to your product, confirm they sort by colour and can supply the stream you need consistently.

7. What is your contamination control process?

Ask specifically how they keep PVC and PP/PE (caps) out — float-sink separation, sorting, and testing. PVC is the single most damaging contaminant in PET processing.

8. Can I get a paid sample to trial on my line?

A trustworthy supplier welcomes this. Run the sample under real conditions before committing volume — it is the single best predictor of how the material behaves for you.

9. What are your logistics and lead times?

Where do they ship, in what packaging, and how quickly? Reliable bulk logistics is part of the product, especially for buyers outside the supplier’s home city.

10. What are the payment and support terms?

Agree pricing basis, payment terms and who to call if a batch is off-spec. Clear terms and a responsive contact prevent small issues from becoming production emergencies.

Frequently asked questions

What should I ask an rPET flake supplier before buying?
At minimum: can they provide a TDS per grade and a COA per lot; their typical IV, moisture, PVC and contamination levels; whether the flake is hot- or cold-washed; how consistent quality is across batches; their reliable monthly volume; and whether you can trial a paid sample on your line.
Why is a per-lot COA important?
Because it reports the actual measured properties of the exact material you are receiving. A single annual certificate tells you nothing about the lot in your warehouse today.
Should I always choose the cheapest rPET flake?
No. The lowest price per kilo can become the highest total cost once you factor in defects, downtime, moisture drying, and rejected batches. Judge on consistency and reliability, not price alone.
How do I test an rPET supplier before committing?
Request a paid sample and run it on your own line under normal conditions, and review COAs from several recent lots to check batch-to-batch consistency.
